Workshop Six: Reno!
Bishop Manogue High School
Glen Eagles in Carson City
Woke up at 6ish. Didn't sleep all that well. had the breakfast buffet but didn't realize that it wasn't free like it was at JO's last year. Then went for a very brief run. I wqasn't sure what the day's plan was going to be, but after a few texts, the plan was that Natasha would pick me up at the hotel at 7:30 and she would drive me to Manogue.
Once there we got the computer presentation set up all working. We also installed my Photoshop files on all the computers I would be using in the labs so apparently I would be all set.
We started a little after nine and there wound up being over 40 kids from Manogue, Carson, McQueen. I did "What Makes a Yearbook Great" which took over an hour and I didn't expect it to. I haven't done that one for a long time. Then was "Think Theme" and it was nearly 10:45 when I finshed. We then let them work in schools until 11:30 on their themes. Then they came back and I quickly went through "Steps to Great Copy" until 12. Then we went back to the library and had pizza for lunch.
After lunch I was supposed to teach InDesign for and hour and then Photoshop for an hour to the beginners. It started as a disaster. They apparently didn't have the enhancements on since the computers only has CS on them. I then decided to teach Photoshop first but I couldn't get open my example photos because they were named improperly. I finally got the going with a water polo picture and they all at least got something out of it all. We did Photoshop until 2:10 and then switched to Indesign and by then they did have the enhancements on. Here the problem was not having the projector working so I could SHOW them how to do the picture placements. Still I made it work and it actually it all worked well.
They worked on the computers in school groups between three and four and at four they came back to the main room and I taught "Captivating Captions." it was hilarious as Whitney was texting me her captions as I was teaching.
We left Manogue and came back to the hotel and they planned to pick us up to drive to Carson City for dinner at six.
We ate at a place called Glen Eagles and I had a flat iron Kobe beef steak. It was all quite good. Our waiter had a crazy accent the made him very difficult to understand and we all were cracking up about it. Howard was always giving Natasha a hard time about her driving so of course she responded (driving faster) and I thought we were going to die.I think we were back at the hotel before nine and I have been napping and watching the Olympics all evening.
