GYE: Day Two
Tour of the Battlefield Day Two
Great Theme Group
Party at the Attic
It had rained quite a bit last night and so we decided not to ride bikes this morning. I have gotten on the internet in my room so I worked on my workshop stuff and the blog and I didn't head out for breakfast until after 7:30. The food line was huge, but I had no trouble getting in and done before the 8:30 Paul A to Z lecture. For the first time in ages I got to listen to the entire thing. Quite fun, good material, not sure I totally agree with it all.
My class started at 9:45. We did
1. Layout gallery of the spreads they did last night
2. Discussion of their goals and what they want to improve in their books (made large sticky papers of goals for the workshop
3. Journal on how their them discussion went.
4. Shades of Personality (poster of who was what, individual posters of names in their color)
5. The Big Questions (poster of qualities of an editor)
Gave away a couple of prizes by drawing
Let them leave at about 11:40. They were pretty tired. Not very lively. Not sure yet if it is me or them. At least three of them are not in the same league as the others. Not sure they get want a great yearbook is supposed to do or they just aren't interested in going there.
I met Dave at lunch and then we decided to take a quick biker ide during the break.
We decided to ride the loop from Gettysburg College to Barlow's Knoll heading east.

Always have to read the signs
What fun.
This was the last Union opposition at the end of day one and when it collapsed the day was won by the Confederates. This ride wasn't much and we decided to go up to the Peace Memorial then over to Seminary Ridge then over to the Lutheran Cemetary and finally through town back to Gettysburg College.

Back on campus we stopped at the Bullet Hole, the college's small cafe, and Dave bought me a Coke and we talked about the history of yearbooks. I had forgotten that Dave was a student of Ben Van Zante in Iowa City. WE were back in the dorm before 2, had plenty of time to get a shower and back to the class by 3 for the 3-5 session. In this two hour block we
1. did the Chatterbugs icebreaker
2. worked through the "What an Editor Does" Keynote
3. created individual staff Mission Statements
4. presented and voted on individual mission statements

The afternoon went well but I really have three schools which, shall we say, don't take yearbook as seriously as the others.
Next it was dinner, then theme group at 6:30. I had the revelation to have us work in pairs so I got together with Lynne Strause and we walked around and spoke with groups together. It worked fantastically; we really played of each other well and actually gave kids much good feedback. I felt so much better about it. It least not totally incompetent.
Next was the party at the Attic for the advisers and staff and that was fun sitting together with three other yearbook advisers of the year. We were actually home before 11 but worked on tommorrow's large group session and this, so I didn't get to bed all that early. I also had a great phone call with Zoe, just chatting.
