Workshop #2: Davis
109º and Smokin'
Didn't sleep well, got up at 5ish. The Woodruffs are coming to fix the fence. They were supposed to come at 6 but got here at more like 7:30. I went to school to pick up some stuff and Robert came home at 8 to say goodbye. It was important to him on some level to come home to say good bye. Not sure why but I'll take it.
We got a call from Autocraft that Zoe's car was finished which was great because it meant I didn't have to drive here all the way out to Wayne and Sally's. We got the hanging muffler and the door fixed for a little over $300. We have spent a ton of money this summer at Autocraft, but hopefully all the cars will be in pretty good shape to start the school year.
When I got back home, I checked my email and it came! The invitation to Nice. Now I have to get all the approvals so we'll see how it goes.

I took off and made it to the airport at almost exactly 10 to get Crystal. She was a little late so it all worked out great. We drove straight to Davis and found the Webster/Emerson dorm complex pretty easily. We were there easily by 11. We got all checked in and found our rooms and then went to find lunch at the Starbucks across the street. I also saw Raph, Sam and Nate. It was already super hot and was supposed to hit 110º. As we were coming to the Starbucks, Crystal got the call from the doctor about Ski. Nothing was definitive but clearly the news wasn't totally hopeful. It is so hard to help her stay positive and to see God in all of this.

The sessions started in the ARC at 1. It only took us a little while to find it. They started with the Howard hoopla which was fun but too long. Then one of Joe's friends,Dan?, who is a writer for a gaming magazine, , spoke and was actually quite good. He made a great connection between what we do in yearbook and what he does as a professional. Next there was a horrible pair of photography speakers who were from some local in the back of the van photo company. They negated about almost everything we believe about student-run yearbook photography. I was next with my theme thing and it went pretty well and there was a good 45 minutes left for them to brainstorm in school groups. Becca and Crstal hung around and the input was very productive. This was for sure the best part. We circulated around and gave the schools who stayed a great deal of constructive criticism.
Next it was dinner and at Davis they have the weirdest dining common rules ever. You can not bring ANYTHING into the dining hall with you including computers. So they had to have the red shirts (angels) sit guarding them.
Our first class session of three started and 6:45 and went until ten. I got through all the leadership stuff (name, game, nameplates, colors, profiles) and also the big questions and roles and responsibilities of an editor. Even at 10 it was still super hot.
The was and adviser social event and it was crazy loud. I stayed until about 12 talking to advisers and the CSRs and artist ant that was fun. I was putting off the inevitable of sleeping in a bleak dorm room that was 72º with once again too short sheets. is this all really worth it.
